Geography

The main aims of our Department are:

  • To stimulate pupils' interest and curiosity about the world in which they live as part of a lifelong process.
  • To develop pupils' awareness at local, national and global scales.
  • To help pupils understand the interrelationships between people and their environments throughout the world.

Key Stage 3

Year 7

  • Map skills: directions, distances, symbols, grid references
  • Our Home Region (I Love London): location, land uses, weather, population change
  • Volcanoes: causes, features, impacts
  • China: features, daily life, schools comparison
  • UK weather: patterns, extreme weather

Year 8

  • The World Cup (focus on Russia and Qatar)
  • Glaciation
  • Geography of Crime
  • Water (Rivers and Flooding)
  • Tourism = individual study

Year 9

  • Development issues: measuring development, commodity dependency, trade, aid
  • Natural Hazards: Tropical storms, Quakes (Haiti & Chile) and Tsunamis
  • Population: changes, density, pyramids, migration

Key Stage 4 – GCSE Specification A Edexel (IGAO)

 Unit 1, Physical Environment

  • The changing landscapes of the UK
  • Weather hazards and climate change
  • Ecosystems, biodiversity and management

Unit 2, Human Environment

  • Changing cities
  • Global development
  • Resource ( ie. energy and water ) management

Unit 3, Geographical Investigations

  • Field work based studies ( one Physical and one Human topic )
  • UK challenges

Assessment

  • Unit 1 1h30 written examination (37.5%)
  • Unit 2 1hr30 written examination (37.5%)
  • Unit 3 1hr30 written examination (25%)
