Deputy House Captains take their first challenge at the Town Hall

This week, the newly elected Deputy House Captains took on their first challenge as part of the new Student Council for 2017-2018 at the annual Camden Council Schools Debates.

The event is an opportunity for schools across Camden to come together and debate a range of different topics which affect young people in our community. Burt, Zakiyy, Billy, Santi, Anes, Casey, Roko and Jack prepared a presentation entitled: The Road Ahead: Schools should do more to practically prepare students for “real-life”. The presentation was received warmly by their counterparts from Regent High School and La Sainte Union who then asked the boys some challenging and thoughtful questions to which our boys responded with clarity and precision. By the end of their presentation, the team had a convincing majority of participants in agreement with their argument. Other debate topics included whether or not the school week should be extended to include Saturdays from Regent High and whether same-sex education was “out-dated and unnecessary” from La Sainte Union.

The Deputy Captain for Lauderdale House, Anes, had this to say about the event - “We had an enjoyable experience and it was great to be in Camden’s Town Hall for the first time and meet the Deputy Mayor. It was fun to discuss important topics with other young people in Camden and to hear a range of interesting and valid viewpoints. Their topics were interesting but I don’t agree with the team from Regent High that we should have school on 6 days a week! I also found the debate topic about same-sex schooling from LSU to be really interesting as we, obviously, have similar experiences to our neighbours!”
