Autumn Term - 22nd November 2024

Welcome to our latest news update, as the weather turns colder, the Winter Entertainment Evening draws closer and Year 11 step up their revision for December mock exams! There are important updates below about the social and AGM, a winter coat drive and careers events.

Year 11 students: LaSWAP Open Evening 28th December and preparation for mock exams

The final few slots are available for our Open Evening next Thursday - all Year 11s should register and plan to attend, so that they are fully aware of the courses and support on offer - it will help them to be clear about their sixth form choices and an opportunity to speak to some teachers that they know as well as subject specialists from other schools. LaSWAP offers 40+ A Level courses and a wide vocational curriculum, and students make excellent progress here compared with other similar institutions across north London.

Information and the signup link can be found at LaSWAP Sixth Form Consortium - Home Any students who want to come but do not have a parent or carer to accompany them should speak to Mr Dennis as soon as possible so that we can assign them to a member of staff who can support them during the evening.

We have shared with Year 11 families already the mock timetable and schedule of intervention sessions, shown below. Mock exams start on 10th December and more information about preparing for exams can be found at https://www.williamellis.camden.sch.uk/student-and-family-information/year-11

Attendance and Behaviour Updates

Congratulations this week to 11K, 11W, 10W, 9F, 9L, 8L and 7K who each had the highest or joint highest attendance in their year groups this week. There are also 329 boys with 100% attendance and punctuality, representing all year groups.

It is particularly important as the weather gets colder and wetter, that students come dressed appropriately for school. This includes:

  • a warm vest (not brightly coloured or patterned) under their shirt
  • a jumper, as listed on the uniform page of the website
  • a warm coat
  • shoes with a proper sole and covering their feet
  • warm socks

Please see below for details of the WESPA coat swap, taking place next Wednesday.

Art Trip to the Natural History Museum

On Wednesday 13th November the Year 11 Art & Graphics GCSE students went on a trip to the Natural History Museum. They were there to do drawings of natural forms as part of their coursework leading up to their mock exams.

The students produced wonderful studies and they really enjoyed the day. They were a credit to the school!

Camden Holiday Activities Programme

Camden's Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) winter programme will run during the Christmas holiday, from 23 December to 3 January, and is open for 5 to 16-year-olds who live in Camden and are eligible for free school meals.

This Week's WESPA Round-Up:

I look forward to seeing many of you this evening at the WESPA Social (Duke of St Albans NW5 1QX from 7pm) and don’t forget the AGM next week.

There are WESPA meetings every half-term and these are the perfect opportunity to share ideas, find out what is going on in school and meet and make some new friends too. This is a special one as we will be electing our Trustees for the coming year. We will meet in the library at 6.30pm on Wednesday 27th November. This week also brings news of our most recent Ofsted Inspection. My fellow Trustee and WES parent Alex Booij had this to say:

WESPA would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to the entire school community on the fantastic achievement of receiving this rating in the recent Ofsted inspection. This is a testament to the dedication, and passion that is brought to school every day.

To the leadership team, staff, and all who contribute to the success of William Ellis, the commitment to providing the best possible education for our WES boys is truly commendable. Achieving this milestone is not just a reflection of academic excellence but also of the supportive, caring, and inspiring environment fostered at WES.

This result is a celebration of the collective effort to nurture, guide, and challenge all WES boys to succeed, and WESPA is sure that it will motivate and inspire everyone to continue striving for excellence. Well done once again on this well deserved recognition, the impact will be felt for years to come.

Lost Property and Winter Coats Drive

On Wednesday 27th November WESPA, volunteers will be laying out all the lost property in the foyer for boys to collect missing items. This will be available during lunch and remain through the afternoon. We have arranged with school to leave the tables in place after school and until the AGM at 6.30pm so that parents can come and check too. Unclaimed branded school items will be washed and recycled for uniform donations and unclaimed coats will be donated to the Chestertons Winter Coat Drive. All other items will be recycled or disposed of.

Y10 Mock Interviews - call for volunteers

Following the success of last year’s event, the WES Careers Department will be running this event again on Monday 10th February 2025, 9am - 1.10pm.

The event consists of mock interviews and role play in the job application process and is a great experience for the students in the build up to work experience later in the year as well as valuable life skills. We need 10-15 parent or local business volunteers to help with the mock interviews - please get in touch if you would like to help.

I look forward to seeing many of you later and for everybody else, have a great weekend and see you at the AGM next week.

Best wishes,

Al
