Autumn Term - 6th December 2024

Welcome to our latest packed news update, including details about the Winter Entertainment Evening next Tuesday, 10th December, and support available for students and families over the holiday period.

Before then, our Year 11 students have their mock examinations starting on Tuesday, 10th December. More information, including the timetable, can be viewed on the Year 11 page of the school website.

Attendance and Behaviour Updates

Full attendance and punctuality to school continue to be important right up to the last day of term, and particularly of course for students sitting mock examinations. Students with 100% attendance and punctuality will be recognised in end of term assemblies for their resilience and commitment to their learning.

No student leave will be approved for the last week of this term or the start of term in January unless there are highly exceptional circumstances. Please see our website for more information.

Last day of Autumn Term

On Friday 20th December school will close early, with students dismissed between 12.15-12.45pm after assemblies to celebrate the successes of this term. This day will also be a Non-Uniform Day in support of the Camden Foodbank. Students wishing to wear their own clothes on this day must bring a £1 donation to take part. Students who do not wish to take part must come to school in full uniform.

Formal teaching for Sixth Form students finishes on Thursday 19th December, though some students may be asked to come in on Friday for specific projects or events by their subject teachers.

Winter Entertainment Evening

We hope you will join us for the annual Winter Entertainment Evening on Tuesday. This will be a lovely opportunity for the school community to come together and watch performances by our students - and the WESPA choir!

Extra Curricular Clubs

A schedule of the clubs currently running at lunchtimes and after school can be found on the 'Extra Curricular' page of the school website.

Year 8 trip to Ravenstor YHA, November 2024

Last month we took 29 Year 8 students on this fully funded trip which was part of Generation Green, a DEFRA funded initiative to introduce young people to the importance of protected landscapes: www.yha.org.uk/generationgreen

The first activity was an introduction to the National Park and the concept of a protected area, how they came about historically, who lives and works in them, the benefits and impacts of the people who visit them.

This was achieved through role playing of the various characters, farmer, quarry worker, property developer, local couple trying to buy their first house, a hiker, an elderly pensioner with deep roots in the community etc then playing a version of the hot air balloon game, by asking who would you get rid of out of all these folks with competing interests? With the outcome of a way of understanding how all these needs must be met with respect towards the environment to coexist without harm to nature, and why it is important to preserve these places for everyone.

Students also took part in a Mini-Beast Hunt and nest building, which allowed them to consider the importance of insects in relation to a healthy ecosystem.

This was a lovely cross-curricular activity; a hunt for, and an observation of, what was present in the environment. Students used scavenged materials to build a nest around a small tube with a lid, which was then filled with hot water to measure temperature before and after leaving outdoors for ten minutes. The boys carried out an investigation into the effectiveness of the natural materials to retain heat and thus preserve life.

There was also shelter-building - where boys were given scenarios to build shelters for: rain forest conditions, an extended stay, wildlife observation and high winds - and and fire-building using firelighters.

This was a safe way for students to get involved with fire building with the use of metal trays, fire strikers, cotton wool pads, ball of wood shavings and kindling. The use of the fire striker provided opportunities for looking at the science behind the spark.

Students also took a scenic walk along Bellamy’s Bank and the Monsell Trail:

And created environmental art works including leaf bugs of their own design, for which they described the insect’s habitat and adaptations.

At the end of the trip, each student had completed their own “Passport to Nature”, which included a brief record of their experiences and the filling out of a pledge to nature.

Edwin in 8K writes:

On our trip to the Peak District we stayed in a youth hostel called Ravenstor. Our very first activity that we did was an introduction to the national park and the people that live and work there. I played the role of an angry farmer! There was also a quarry worker, a rich property developer, a local couple trying to save for their first house, a hiker, a local pensioner, a gift shop owner, and a cyclist. We learned about their lives and situations and some of the issues that are important to them in the national park.
The other activities we did on the trip included, nest making, den building, fire making, and we got our own passport to nature to fill out. In it we had to make a pledge about how we can help nature in the future. The pledge I made was to plant wild flowers and let bits of wood rot for insects to live in. I would also like to say that our rooms were so comfortable and that is was a really great trip!

Year 7 Basketball Success

The Year 7 basketball team got the season off to a winning start, beating Regents High School 12 - 4 in their first game of the season.
Basketball club is open to all students and takes place every Tuesday 3:15 pm - 4:15 pm.

Movember Fundraising

This November again saw the PE department growing moustaches in an effort to raise awareness around men's mental health for the students. This has started to become a yearly tradition in the school and the students take great joy in commenting on their progress.

But there is a serious reason for their funny face fuzz; We all have partners, fathers, brothers, sons, uncles, and friends that we love. Too many of these men are dying too young, impacting relationships, families, and communities. The PE department are using their new appearance to start conversations around mental health with the students in the school in an attempt to break the stereotype that men do not need to talk about their emotions.

If you would like to donate today and help us build a future with healthier men and healthier communities, please follow this link, or donate on uk.movember.com.

Camden Foodbank's Christmas Appeal

In the last few weeks of Autumn Term we will once again be working with the Camden Foodbank to support local people who are struggling during these difficult times.

Camden Foodbank offer emergency food supplies to local people who need some extra support to make ends meet. They have outlined a list of items that they would hope could be donated to help the local community during the next few weeks.

It would be wonderful to provide a bumper collection for them over the festive period and we thank you in advance for any contributions you can make.

If you are able, we would like you to please bring any items from the list below into the main office by Tuesday 17th December.

We continue to appreciate all the support that our families give to us a school and know that you will extend this kindness to the wider community where you can. Any contribution is welcome.

This Week's WESPA Round-Up:

Dear families,

Winter Entertainment 2024 - Tuesday 10th December, 6pm

We are in for such a treat at Winter Entertainment this year - music and drama galore and another outing for the WESPA Choir too. Team WESPA will be manning the bar so come and join us on Tuesday at 5.30pm before the concert starts at 6pm.

WESPA AGM and New Trustees

Thank you to those who made time to come to the AGM. This is the time of year where WESPA elects Trustees for the year and it is with great pleasure that I can announce that, not only were all six previous Trustees reelected but, parents Fatima and Chae were also elected to join the Committee.

Thank you to my fellow parents and Trustees Alex, Galit, Vicky, Sibylle and Caroline for all your amazing work last year. Much of it is not visible but makes a tremendous difference - be it fundraising, helping create wonderful career opportunities, supporting extracurricular and enrichment activities, growing plants for school, baking cakes, making second uniforms available for free and most of all, bringing joy and endless enthusiasm to the school. I can’t wait to get stuck into the new year with the new team.

Have a great weekend and see you for a mince pie and some entertainment on Tuesday!

Best wishes,

Al
