Spring Term - 14th February 2025

Welcome to our latest news update, including a feature on last week's Deep Learning Day, careers and enterprise events and upcoming half term activities.

Deep Learning Day, Friday 7th February

During last week's DLD, Year 10 students watched parts of "Black Sheep," a powerful film that shows how young people deal with racism and explore their identity and the ways that sometimes this can be challenged. Through watching interviews and acted scenes, students had meaningful conversations about identity, what it means to be yourself, and how to support each other during difficult times.

Some outstanding Year 10 students stepped up to co-lead activities with Year 7 and 8 students, in response to the statement: "We have more in common that divides us". Together, they learned about important moments in history where people stood up for what's right - such as the suffragette movement, the Tiananmen Square protests and the Rwandan genocide.

The day for Year 9 was co-led and planned with Middlesex University, looking and the power of messages on social media, misogyny and sexual harassment. As with other year groups, the focus was on what students could do if they face those attitudes from others, and how to understand the way that messages and algorithms work on social media to spread certain ideas. An example of the outcome of this work from last year can be found at "It's Not OK" - Middlesex University Changing The Culture

The day ended with elections for the Student Council. These representatives get to share students' ideas about making the school even better, and they meet regularly with the Headteacher and other school leaders to help improve the school community.

Looking ahead to summer exams

Students in years 11 and 13 are starting half term today with an increasing focus on exam preparation and revision. As this screen in reception shows, the timeline towards the start of the exams can now be measured in days - 83 until the main exams start.

One important part of exam preparation is stress management and keeping up good routines well in advance of the exams, so that they can keep up their energy and focus once they start. A useful guide to how you can support students at home with this can be found at Managing Exam Stress: A Parent's Guide to Supporting Emotional Well-being

School Canteen Reminder

This is a reminder to regularly check and top up your son's ParentPay account for break and lunch food. If a student does not have sufficient funds in their account, they will not be served food or drink at break time. For lunch, students will always be served and will not be turned away, but they will not have access to the full lunch service. This meal will be charged to your son's ParentPay account, resulting in a negative balance that will need to be cleared.

There are automatic daily caps on all students' accounts which means they are unable to spend over £7 a day in the canteen.  If you would like this to be lowered for your son, please do email the finance office at finance@williamellis.camden.gov.uk to lower this, stating clearly his full name and tutor group.

Just a reminder that if the cap is spent on breaktime food, then students will be unable to buy food at lunch.

The Free School Meals (FSM) allowance is £2.65 which can only be used at lunchtime. This will buy a meal from the canteen but anything spent over this amount will be charged and so money will need to be added to accounts for additional items/ food at break. A full list of our pricing can be found on our website https://www.williamellis.camden.sch.uk/canteen

If you are not sure if you are eligible for Free School Meals please complete the application form at https://accountforms.camden.gov.uk/freeschoolmeals/ to check. It's really important that if your child is eligible for FSM you apply as the school receives additional funding for SM students. There are also discounts available on some trips and activities for FSM students.

Year 9 'Creative Youth' Art Project

Ms Ozkaya writes:

On Monday February 10th a group of Year 9 art students made their second trip to The October Gallery where they have been working on a project inspired by the work on show.

On Monday the students looked at a piece by the Artist Therese Weber, and used various techniques to build texture into their images.

Here's what two students had to say about their experiences:

" I had a very fun time at the October Gallery. The art was nice and it was cool. There were lots of activities for creativity and lots of opportunities for drawing the things we liked. An activity that I really enjoyed was when we drew things that we felt when listening to different music. We also learned about the art in the gallery and some of the stories behind it, as well as the different patterns we saw and really looking at some of the details in the art works. This trip has really made me want to pick art for my GCSE's as you learn that even the little details in the work are very important." Lije 9K

"I had a really good time at the October Gallery. It was a really fun and creative experience that helped me to decide to definitely pick art for one of my GCSE's. We walked around the gallery looking at the pictures and sculptures and choosing which was our favourite and least favourite. For one of the activities we listened to a song of our choice and draw whatever came into our mind when listening to the song. This was our second visit to the gallery and this time we explored one of the artist's life through her painting and we made our own one just like it!" Alexander 9B

Year 7 English Autobiographical Writing

Mr Rahman writes:

Year 7 English students participated in a guided walk through Hampstead Heath this half-term as part of their 'Autobiographical Writing' studies. They were encouraged celebrate ordinary events and the local area by taking note of sensory details which could later enhance their writing, adding vivid and engaging descriptions to everyday events and places.

Year 8 Drama Trip - 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child'

Ms Hughes writes:

On the 4th February, students from Year 8 had the opportunity to see 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child' at the Palace Theatre - it was brilliant!

Luca was impressed by the swimming scenes and how synchronised they were, and Joachim said the acting was 'impeccable'. Levi loved how they brought time travel to life on stage, Otis loved the dementors, Jazz thought Voldemort was the best character and Tom said it was the most fabulous play he'd ever seen!

Two members of the audience commended our boys on their excellent behaviour throughout the performance - well done, boys!

Year 10 Food Technology Trip to Waitrose Cookery School

Ms Sinnott writes:

Year 10's and year 11's visited the Waitrose cookery school this week and had the opportunity to prepare dishes under the supervision of professional chefs.
They had a great time.

Enterprise and Careers Events

Mr Parry writes:

January and February were exciting months filled with opportunities for students to explore their future careers and develop essential skills. William Ellis prides itself on its careers programme and here are a few examples of in-school events.

Year 11 Choices Day kicked off the month providing students with valuable insights into post-16 pathways. A variety of guest speakers from universities and apprenticeship providers shared their expertise, helping students understand the diverse opportunities available after their GCSEs. Whether considering A-levels, vocational courses, or apprenticeships, students were able to explore their options and make informed decisions about their future.

Year 9 Enterprise Day, offered students the chance to engage in a dynamic, hands-on experience in business and entrepreneurship. Through interactive workshops and team challenges, students developed problem-solving, teamwork, and leadership skills while learning about the fundamentals of business and innovation.

For Year 10, the focus was on preparing for the world of work. The Get Ready for Work Experience Day in early February equipped students with practical knowledge on workplace expectations, professionalism, and how to make the most of their upcoming work experience placements. This was followed by the Mock Interview Day, where students had the invaluable opportunity to participate in one-on-one interviews with professionals from various industries. These realistic interviews allowed students to practice their communication skills, build confidence, and receive constructive feedback to help them in future job applications.

These events provided students across different year groups with meaningful experiences to support their future aspirations, ensuring they are well-prepared for the next stages of their education and career journeys.

Thank yous

It has been a busy week at WES and I would like to extend huge thanks to WESPA Trustee Alex who helped organise the Y10 Mock Interviews. Thank you also to all the parents who volunteered their time to interview our boys and give them such valuable insight and experience. There is more about the event from Y10 parent Tim below. Thank you also to Alex for organising the visit from Michael La Rose. I hear that this was a really rewarding and thought provoking session for the boys. Thank you to Y9 parent and Eco Lead Jane, head of Y12 Andrew Mangham and Claudia from Growing Green, for organising the Eco Club Trip to see Wilding with students from our neighbouring schools. Claudia has written more about the Knepp Estate for us below.

WESPA Trustees were also very fortunate to gather for an Unconference session hosted by Y10 parent and Trustee Sibylle. The purpose of the gathering was to improve and develop WESPA strategy and thinking. Our themes were Legacy and Kindness. It was a very rewarding and informative time spent together.

Thank you also to the generosity (and baking skills) of the many parents and grandparents who contributed to WESPA Wednesday and for bringing some epicurean va va voom to the staff CPD session. If WES ever enters Bake Off, WESPA Trustee Vicky gets my vote!

Have a great weekend all

WES Careers: Y10 Mock interviews

A group of us joined our year 10s this week, to give them some practice at being interviewed for a job. In advance, the boys had chosen one of four roles to which they would apply, they then prepared some potential responses to questions. Our task was to be the interviewers.

The often quiet, unprepossessing first impression I got from many of the boys I met belied what followed. After a few minutes of teasing out their background, it became clear that they are almost always leading full lives of activity, achievement and responsibility within their families and friendship groups.

The range of maturity is fascinating to see. Clearly some have a way to go before heading into the outside world, as you would expect at year 10, while others would be an asset to a team in the workplace right away. I fully expect others still to be leading teams in the not distant future.

Our boys are smart, caring and capable. They are integrating into society and taking responsibility. I hope the interviews gave the boys some valuable experience; they certainly gave me evidence to be optimistic about the next generation.

Tim, Y10 Parent and interview volunteer

Michael La Rose visit

On Tuesday in drama class we were visited by Michael La Rose from New Beacon Books in Finsbury Park. In drama class we have been studying different voices including immigration and identity. The bookshop sells books and also makes them with lots of Black British, Caribbean and African authors and poets. We used this to start our poems about identity and discussed our ideas in class with Michael.

Wilding Cinema Trip

Last week, 32 students from Acland Burghley School, La Sainte Union Catholic School, Parliament Hill School, St Aloysius’ College and William Ellis School attended a viewing of Wilding. Based on the book of the same name by Isabella Tree, the documentary showed the dramatic transformation of the expansive Knepp Estate in Sussex from barren agricultural land to nature haven, after its owners put a stop to 400 years of farming on the family-owned estate more than 20 years ago.

Sponsored by Veolia, the cinematic experience was another successful initiative organised by local rewilding organisation Growing Green. Founded 2 years ago by a trio of energetic Camden residents, the Community Interest Company has been greening schools’ grounds, boosting biodiversity in community open spaces and encouraging young people to spend more time in nature.

Wilding illustrated in a beautiful and captivating manner the necessity to protect the ground beneath our feet and rethink our relations with the land and wildlife. The documentary left a strong, positive impression on the students and their teachers. "It shows nature can heal itself as long as people stop making bad choices”, one student commented on the explosion of wildlife witnessed in Knepp and captured in a picturesque manner by the film. “The story is very inspiring and made me think about the impact of farming, and the pigs were my favourites!”, shared another student following the film viewing at the Curzon Bloomsbury cinema.

The Growing Green team is delighted with the interest in rewilding sparked by the documentary. “It's important for us to show students that change is possible, and we hope that some may even consider careers that help drive this transformation!”, Capucine Schegin said. The showing was a project especially close to Claudia Kretzschmar’s heart. “Since visiting Knepp, I have felt compelled to share what true, healthy nature looks like with as many people as possible”, she said.
