Spring Term - 30th January 2026

Welcome to our latest news update, including congratulations for students who have received offers from Cambridge University, preparations for Ramadan and a reminder of our library e-book platform, which is available for all families and students. Also, look out below for exciting clubs and activities available during the upcoming half term break!

Careers, trips and visits: opportunities for Year 7

Next week there are two important curriculum opportunities for Year 7 students that form an important part of their curriculum.

On Monday, there is a careers trip to Canary Wharf, to visit the offices of KPMG, one of the world's leading financial and consulting firms. Students will learn about the way a corporate organisation works, meet younger and more experienced employees and how to be successful in this industry in the future, if that is what they would like to do. This trip is completely free.

On Wednesday, there is a trip for all Year 7 students to the British Film Institute at the South Bank. Using French short films as a stimulus, the morning session will consist of a range of short films suitable for KS3, alongside interactive activities for students. For this trip, we are asking for a voluntary contribution of £5 to cover the cost of entry to the BFI.

There will be many opportunities for extending vocabulary and for students to discuss themes and ideas linked to the films. In the afternoon there will be an introduced screening of a French feature film (with English subtitles) —Belle et Sébastien.

Unfortunately, we have not received enough permission slips from families yet and if we have very few students who have permission, we may need to cancel one or both visits. If you have not yet returned your permission slip, please do so. If you have any questions about the trip, please contact the school as soon as possible.

Holocaust Memorial Day 2026

Holocaust Memorial Day was the theme of this year's assembly, as the 27th January marks the day each year that the Holocaust is remembered.

This is the day when the world remembers the six million Jewish men, women and children who were murdered, and the millions more murdered under Nazi persecution.  We also learn and commemorate where persecution led in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

The Holocaust threatened the fabric of civilisation, and discrimination and persecution must still be resisted every day. HMD is for everyone. It is a day when across the UK and beyond people learn more about the past, empathise more with people today, and work to build a better future.  It helps us bear witness for communities who suffered attempted destruction, and honour the survivors and all those whose lives were changed beyond recognition.

If you would like to follow up on this discussion at home, there are some helpful resources about Holocaust Memorial Day at Holocaust Memorial Day Trust | What is Holocaust Memorial Day?

Our library hosts an ePlatform where your son - and the rest of the family - can borrow ebooks or audiobooks to read/listen to. The username format is first name and surname (e.g. James Richmond) and the password is: WESLibrary1

https://www.eplatform.co/gb/find-libraries/

Note that your son must first select William Ellis School, then sign in with his username and password. There are a wide range of books that he can choose from whatever his reading level.

Parent Governor Nominations

Information about how to become a Parent Governor was sent out to all families earlier this week. Governors play a key role in the leadership of the school including the appointment of key staff, overseeing the budget and monitoring progress in the curriculum. Being a governor can be very rewarding and will provide you with the opportunity to work as part of a team and gain insights into how schools run. You do not need any specific qualifications or previous experience—enthusiasm, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to making our school the best it can be. Training and support will be provided.

If you would like to put yourself forward, please refer to the letter sent out on Tuesday 27th January, read the declaration of eligibility information and complete the nomination form including a brief personal statement. Forms must be received by the school office on or before 9th February, in an envelope marked ‘Parent Governor Nomination’ or alternatively an electronic version can be sent to info@williamellis.camden.sch.uk.

In Year Admission Open Morning

On Tuesday 10th March, we will be hosting a special Open Morning for families who may be looking for an alternative to the school their secondary school age son attends.

If you have family or friends who may be interested in viewing our school and meeting staff and students, please let them know that they can register their attendance via our website:

Ramadan February-March 2026

Ramadan begins next month, with many Muslim members of our school community fasting (i.e. abstaining from food and drink) throughout the school day and daylight hours for the following month.

Students are expected to continue with their education, attending school every day and arriving on time throughout Ramadan.

The changes in daily routine (eating time and additional prayer) can impact students’ energy levels throughout the day.  Nonetheless, students are encouraged to participate in their lessons as they usually do, with an appreciation of the importance of learning and of following the behaviour policy; usual warnings and sanctions will be issued for unacceptable and disruptive behaviour when necessary.

In physical subjects like PE, we provide students with the option to complete less physically strenuous activities. However, students are still expected to take part.

Full participation in music lessons is expected, although students may wish not to perform publicly. Students cannot leave the classroom and be elsewhere for their music lesson. Music is an important part of the school curriculum and the instruments and songs that are played are not unpleasant or vulgar.

During this period of heightened spiritual focus for Muslim students, Citizenship and PSHE lessons will refrain from teaching sex education. This will only apply to Year 9 students and above. The focus on puberty in PSHE lessons is not a cause for concern.

Please remind your child that there is no need to leave their lessons to pray because they will be able to perform the afternoon prayer during their lunch break. Also, that there will be sufficient time to complete the later afternoon prayer once school has finished.

Please also remind students that, when performing Ablution (Wudu) before they pray, they should not wash their feet in the toilets for Health and Safety reasons. It is permissible to wipe the feet over the socks.

More Oxbridge Success for Sixth Form Students!

Ms Wilson writes:

Further to our congratulations to Istihaq last week on receiving an offer to study Biology at Oxford University, I am delighted to also congratulate Lydia and Luca who have this week received offers to study at Cambridge University - Human, Social & Political Sciences and Natural Sciences respectively! This means that we have 100% success rate in applicants receiving offers from Oxbridge this year - well done then, and good luck for the upcoming challenges of working hard for A Level exams and achieving the conditions of the offers!

We hope to achieve the same success rate with our current Year 12s, 11 of whom have made a successful application to a scheme run by Girton College, Cambridge to help them prepare for applications to prestigious universities. Well done to Maleeka, Hugh, Kaliyah, Cadense, Genevieve, Luis, Weny, Tibor, Mahesh, Jesse and Miriam!

Excellence At Ellis Group

The inaugural meeting of this year's Excellence at Ellis group took place this week, on Wednesday. This is a group of students whose previous results shows their capacity for outstanding results, and who are interested in working together with other students thinking about the ways in which knowledge is created in different subjects, and what we can all learn from thinking in different sorts of ways. We will be thinking about the idea of love next week and students are already reading about the ways in which love can be seen in MRI scans, and historical records, as well as the ethnography of dating apps! If you think these sound interesting topics, you may want to explore the podcasts available here: https://www.it.ox.ac.uk/article/valentines-day
If you have an idea for a future topic that could be explored in an interdisciplinary way, please get in touch! fwilson@williamellis.camden.sch.uk

Year 12 Opera Trip

Dr Smith and Ms Solea led an enrichment trip to the Royal Opera House on Wednesday, 28th January. Nineteen of our KS5 students went to see La Traviata.

Miriam in Year 12 writes:
La Traviata was a magical experience because it showed me the power of Art in a way that I hadn't experienced before. Opera is a timeless art form and to see world-class performances in such an amazing venue was a once in a lifetime opportunity and to have my first experience of seeing it here was very special. I also loved the extra opportunity that the Royal Opera House gave us: during the second interval were were fortunate enough to see behind the scenes of the set change and be introduced to an apprentice who had been sitting where we were just last year. This really opened my eyes to a wide range of job opportunities in the creative industry.

LaSWAP Musical Production

LaSWAP students have written an original jukebox musical, which will be performed at Acland Burghley School on Wednesday and Thursday next week.

Students and families interested in supporting this performance can purchase tickets via the QR code above, or via this link.
