Autumn Term - 26th September 2025

Welcome to our latest news update, including celebrations of the European Week of Languages, summer school arts and crafts and the launch of the William Ellis Trust website. Below there is also the latest WESPA newsletter, and enrichment opportunities for students of all ages across Camden.

Attendance Matters / Homepage

We wrote in our newsletter at the start of the year about the importance of good routines to ensure that all students are in school every day. We know that students who attend well each day, achieve better in their exams and also build stronger relationships and make the most of opportunities such as careers events, trips and extracurricular clubs.

In the first four weeks of term, the best attendance in each year group has been achieved by 11K, 10W, 9F, 8W, 7W. Congratulations to the boys in those tutor groups!

Flu vaccinations are an important way of making sure that your son avoids serious illness over the winter. You may have received information about this already elsewhere, but if not you can find out more at Children's flu vaccine - NHS

As happens every September, this week William Ellis celebrated the European Week of Languages. This celebrates different languages and helps people understand other cultures. The Council of Europe created this event to recognise Europe's 200+ languages and encourage people to learn new languages throughout their lives.

Students took part in activities like learning greetings in different languages, and listening to stories told in various languages. These activities helped students improve their thinking skills and learn about different cultures. We also celebrated all the different languages that families in our school community speak. If you speak another language at home, now is a perfect time to practise with your son – and if you don't, why not try out the greetings below.

How to say hello in 10 languages

We hope this event starts conversations at home about the languages your family speaks and why learning languages is important in today's world.

Year 7 Summer School Art and Craft

These amazing clay tiles were created by the new Year 7 students during Summer School. They are influenced by African American face pots, which the students learnt about, before designing & creating their own.

Extra-Curricular Music Lessons

Extra-curricular music lessons have started in school this week and it's great to hear the music department alive throughout the day with the sounds of keys, strings, percussion, woodwind and brass.

We'd like to remind you that the way that these music lessons are applied and paid for has changed this academic year, with applications and payments now going direct to Camden Music.

To sign up, go to the Camden Music registration page then select your chosen instrument and follow the instructions to join the waiting list.

Camden Music will contact you when a space is available on the timetable for your chosen instrument.

Students who are eligible for Free School Meals may be eligible for a discount on lessons. Please ensure that you indicate this in your application.

World Mental Health Day: 'Hello Yellow'

WES will be taking part in 'Hello Yellow' on Friday 10th October (World Mental Health Day) to raise awareness and funds for YoungMinds, the UK’s leading charity for young people’s mental health.

No young person should feel alone with their mental health and that’s why Hello Yellow matters. We’re taking this opportunity as a school community to come together and show our students that we’re with them and they’re never alone with their mental health.

Staff will be taking part by wearing a dash of yellow on Friday October the 10th and students will be ‘doodling their emotions’ in a specially created form time activity.

We will also be donating the proceeds of a traditional ‘non-uniform day’ which will take place on the last Friday before half term 24th October when as usual your son will be encouraged to bring in a £1 donation.

Most importantly, we want to share the resources which YoungMinds offer to support parents and carers if you ever need help and advice to support your children.

This includes:

• online resources (www.youngminds.org.uk/parent/)

• a phone line, open 9.30am-4pm (0808 802 5544)

• an online chat for parents and carers to speak to trained professionals if you’re concerned about your children’s mental health (www.youngminds.org.uk/parents-helpline/)

The new William Ellis Trust website has gone live this week. Please have a look at this site for a fuller introduction to the Trust's aims and how it works on behalf of the pupils and the school.

A reminder that the Trust is hosting an event on the evening of Thursday 23rd October, which will feature Alastair Campbell in conversation with students. The event is open to a broad range of people including alumni, current and former parents and local businesses and others involved in education. If you, or any past members of the WES community you know, would like to attend please register via Eventbrite here.

Date for the diary - Year 6 to Year 7 Induction Day 2026

Families with a son currently in Year 6 may like to note that the Year 6 to Year 7 Induction Day for Camden, and other neighbouring boroughs, has been agreed to take place on Thursday 2nd July 2026.

This is an incredibly important part of the secondary transition process, when students spend the day at their secondary school for the first time, giving them an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the building and staff, and to begin to make new friends.

This Thursday was our Open Evening, and our second Open Morning took place this Wednesday. It was great to have so many visitors - Year 6 students or younger, and their families. As always, the many students who supported the evening in departments or who have spoken or guided visitors at these events.

A reminder that our Open Events for Secondary Transition in 2026 continue next month with the following events:

Meet The Headteacher

Wednesday 1st October  4-5pm

Wednesday 15th October 4-5pm

Monday 20th October 4-5pm - Online Event

Open Mornings

If you, or anyone you know, would like to attend one of our Open Events, please sign up here: https://www.williamellis.camden.sch.uk/wes-news/news-posts/open-events-2025

Success for our 6th Form Sports Education & Training Programme Students

We were delighted to celebrate the success of our KS5 Sports Education & Training Programme students earlier this month, with an event in our Sixth Form Centre. We heard from Kirsty Pealling, who achieved 2 Domestic Trebles with Arsenal and 17 England Caps during her football career, before becoming a highly respected and valued member of our teaching team in the sixth form. It was fantastic to see so many of our students receive their awards in front of the Mayor of Camden as well as former students who are now working within the fields of sport, coaching and education. Well done to all our former SETP students - and I hope that all our current and future SETP students find their predecessors as inspiring as we do!

LaSWAP Enrichment Activity Timetable

Students who wish to attend an activity must be wearing their ID badge to take part. Enrichment or super curricular activities should be logged by students, as this will be excellent information to include in university and job applications

This Week's WESPA Round-Up:

Dear families,

It was a pleasure to see many parents at the meeting on Monday - much to discuss as always and a very lovely atmosphere. If anybody would like to see the minutes of our communal meetings, please add your name to the mailing list on the WESPA website here.

Thank you

A huge thank you to all the WES parents and boys who represented William Ellis School at the recent Meet the Parents evenings and to all the boys who are representing our school at the open events. Meeting the students was one of the reasons my family all chose William Ellis and it’s great to see each successive generation proud to represent WES.

3 ways to help

Many parents have asked if there are easy ways to help raise money for school. Here are three quick ideas that have enabled us to buy equipment, hire facilities, fund awards and run free events for our school community.

1. Easyfundraising

For those new to the idea, Easyfundraising is one of the easiest, most free ways to make money for our school. All you have to do is do your regular shopping through Easyfundraising and the shops you use give us a proportion of what you spend. It’s incredibly simple and easy to do - just sign up here.

https://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/williamellispa/

Thank you to the 96 supporters who already do this - we have raised well over £3000 so far! Just imagine if we all did this…

2. Standing order

Thank you to the parents who have chosen to donate regularly. It is really helpful for budgets and planning how we can support our boys. If you'd like to set up a regular standing order or make a direct donation please email williamellispa@gmail.com

There are about 800 students at WES. If each WES family contributed £1 a month, this would raise nearly £10,000 a year which is enough to hire the minibus, buy 10 new Mac computers for the music department or help fund the shortfall in residential trips overseas.

We understand that parents may like to donate to a particular cause that is important to them and, in this event, it is possible for WESPA to ring-fence funds and coordinate with school directly.

3. Fundraiser

WESPA runs regular fundraisers that raise money for school. Please do join in when you can. It’s not just about the money and is also a lovely way to meet other parents and have some fun. Our next fundraisers will be the Fun Run and Winter Entertainment!

Have a great weekend

Best wishes,

Al
