Autumn Term - 23rd October 2026

Welcome to our latest news update and the final NEWS AT WES for this half term. It has been a huge pleasure as always to reconnect with older students as they returned in September, meet those new to the school and also deepen our relationships with families and the wider community. Nowhere was that more obvious than the From The Boys podcast launch event last night, which you can read more about below.

You will also find details in this newsletter about the upcoming Year 11 parent information event on 3rd November, and opportunities for young people around Camden including at the London AI Campus and a WESPA news roundup, including the upcoming AGM.

We look forward to seeing all students back in school at 8:30am on Monday 2nd November.

Reminder: Year 11 GCSE Information Evening, Tuesday 3 November

We'd like to again remind Year 11 families that we will be hosting an information session on Tuesday after half term for parents and carers. This important session will provide information about December's mock exams and how to support your son's preparation for these and for his final GCSE exams.

We would like all Year 11 parents/carers to attend with their child. Thank you to the 55 families who have already confirmed their attendance. If you have not yet done so please complete this short form to RSVP:

The session will include:

  • a talk on why the mock exams matter
  • an overview of exam procedures and logistics
  • hands-on workshops on supporting study and revision at home
  • revision materials to take away
  • information on applying to LaSWAP sixth form - remember to sign up for the November Open Evening at https://www.laswap.camden.sch.uk/

  • the chance to meet senior leaders to discuss individual queries

This information evening will have useful tips for all families to navigate this exciting but pressured period and we look forward to seeing you on 3rd November.

Free School Meals Eligibility - recent changes

There have been changes this term in the FSM eligibility criteria -any family who is in receipt of universal credit is now eligible and should apply for this support for their sons in school.

To find out if your child is eligible and sign up for the free school meals scheme see Free school meals - Camden Council.

If you have any questions please contact, finance@williamellis.camden.sch.uk.

Early finish for students on 26th November

School will close early before the LaSWAP Open Evening on 26th November so that the school site can be prepared for this event.

Students will be dismissed at lunchtime on this day and will be able to get a grab-and-go lunch from the canteen before leaving school.

The following day, Friday 27th November, will be a Staff Professional Development Day and school will be closed to students.

PLANTING OUR NEW SENSORY GARDEN

If you have visited the school recently, you will have seen the new garden that has been developed for students at the front of the school. However, we had a total grant £500,000 from Camden to redevelop the internal SEND spaces and also the outside. That has covered all the building work and internal improvements, but now we need to do the garden!

Can you plant?

Can you dig?

Can you make tea and food for people who garden?

If so, we would love to have you join us on Friday 27th November to plant hedges and trees, and to fill in the decorative bark. Bring friends, family or colleagues, and garden tools if you have them! If you think you would be able to help, please complete this form: Help build our garden on Friday 27th November – Fill in form

'From the Boys' is live!

From the Boys, the podcast series made by William Ellis School pupils, is now available on all major podcast platforms.

The series was created by 16 Year 10 boys during their work experience with Middlesex University in July. They spent a week learning media production skills and recording conversations about what it means to grow up male in Camden today. The project began in May with workshops for the whole of Year 10, exploring boyhood, masculinity and the pressures young men face.

Well over 100 guests came together at school yesterday evening to celebrate the launch. Thank you to families, staff, alumni, funders, those working in the boyhood and masculinity space, and friends of the school who came to hear the boys talk about making the podcasts, what they learnt along the way and what they hope the series will achieve. There was a real buzz in the air, and the boys answered a deluge of questions from an enthusiastic audience as consummate professionals.

You may also have heard the section on BBC Radio London yesterday: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0032s0p - the 'From the Boys' section starts at 3:40:30 into the show.

We are delighted that the podcast series are now live, and encourage all with an interest in supporting young men to listen. See below for how to listen, and help spread our boys’ wisdom further.

How you can help

The boys made this series to be heard. Please:

  • Listen and follow on Spotify, and Apple podcasts and leave a rating or review
  • Share it with friends, family and anyone who works with young people
  • Support further projects like this by joining the Rather Use Than Fame Club, which helped fund From the Boys

Our thanks go to Middlesex University, the Hadley Trust, the Hampstead Wells and Campden Trust, Olly Olsen and the members of the Rather Use Than Fame Club, and above all to the boys themselves.

There are big plans for how to extend the impact of the podcasts through workshops, school visits and more. Watch this space.

After-school sessions at the London AI Campus

The Science Department is arranging to take students to the London AI Campus for after-school sessions on Thursdays in November, and to an 'Introduction to Game Development' session on Tuesday 3rd November at 4pm.

Places for these sessions will be limited. If your son is interested, please tell him to speak to Mr Farah to sign up.

Year 11 Trip to see the work of a WES Alumnus

Ms Madsen writes:

On Thursday this week the Year 11 art and graphics groups went to Swiss Cottage library to see an exhibition called 'Seeing the Potential' which is being held as part of Black History month.

The artist exhibiting was Matthew Small, who attended William Ellis and studied art A level here. We were extremely grateful and excited that Matthew Small attended the exhibition and came to talk to the year 11 students. He told us that he didn't pass his GCSE's and that he felt he owed his career and life to the William Ellis art department. He spoke about his work and explained that the portraits were made up of discarded materials as a metaphor for how some people are treated in society. He grew up in Camden, and he said that apart from in art, he felt that his potential had not been seen.

He also talked about his work making portraits of footballers such as Marcus Rashford and Rahim Sterling and their work fighting against racism and inequality. He encouraged Year 11 students to find their passion and express their beliefs through art.

The exhibition runs until mid-December and tickets can be booked here: Seeing the Potential - Free Exhibition by Matthew Small Tickets, Multiple dates | Eventbrite

Remembrance and RBL's Poppy Appeal

{item_alt_tag}

Tuesday, 11th November, marks Armistice Day - the end of fighting in World War One in 1918. This occasion will be marked in school with assemblies through the week touching on themes of remembrance, respect and courage, and with a 2 minute silence on Armistice Day itself.

The school office has poppies available for students who wish to donate to the work of the Royal British Legion in supporting veterans of conflict. We request a minimum donation of 30p per poppy from students, though any more than that would be gratefully received by RBL.

LaSWAP response to Camden New Journal’s reporting of LSU Consultation

You will likely have seen in the press reports about a Camden consultation on the future of some other schools in the borough. Ms Jones, together with the Heads of the other LaSWAP schools, wrote in the Camden New Journal this week about how much we value working with La Sainte Union in the LaSWAP consortium.

The letter in full can be read on page 17 of the Camden New Journal.

Camden SEND Surgeries

Camden SEND Surgeries provide a face-to-face space for families to ask questions, share feedback and access information, advice and guidance about SEND services and support in Camden.

Families can come along with questions about areas such as SEN support and EHCP processes, educational provision, accessible travel, social care or other SEND-related support. They do not need to be known to SEND services and can attend any of the surgery locations.

The next SEND Surgery will be held on 17 November at 10:30 to 12:30 at Kilburn Grange Best Start Family Hub.

Who families can speak to

Depending on the session, colleagues attending may include representatives from:

  • SEN team
  • Early Years Inclusion
  • Educational Psychology
  • Accessible Travel (CATS)
  • SEND Social Care
  • Other relevant SEND services

The updated SEND Surgeries flyer below includes the new SEND Surgery dates for 2026–27.

Picturebooks For All! A celebration of languages in the library

Being Human is a celebration of languages in the library where families can explore colourful picture books in different languages. Discover stories from around the world and celebrate the many languages spoken in our community and beyond. There will also be colouring activities for all ages, while slightly older children can enjoy making their own mini books.

The events are part of Being Human Festival, an annual national festival celebrating the humanities. Picturebooks for All! is one of the activities taking place as part of this year's festival, hosted at Camden Libraries. Both Camden events are free to attend. The activities are particularly suitable for children aged 5 to 10, but families with children of all ages are very welcome.

The two events are taking place on Wednesday 11 November, 4pm to 5.30pm at Queen’s Crescent Library, 165 Queen’s Crescent, NW5 4HH and on Friday 13 November, 4pm to 5.30pm at Pancras Square Library, 5 Pancras Square, N1C 4AG.

Introduction to dance and movement for adults – free places available

Camden is offering a practical course which is open to anyone aged over 18 who wants to explore dance as a way to improve their health and wellbeing, express themselves creatively, and build confidence in moving.

Through a range of simple movement and dance exercises, you'll discover ways to support your mental and physical wellbeing in a welcoming and supportive environment. It runs on Thursdays, from 12 November to 17 December, from 12.30pm to 1.45pm, at Talacre Community Sports Centre, Dalby Street, NW5 3LN. No previous dance experience is required – free places available for local residents referred by their GPs. Find out more and sign-up.

Yours faithfully,

Izzy Jones

Headteacher

This Week's WESPA Round-Up:

Dear parents and carers,

It was lovely to meet some of you at the WESPA social earlier this month and to reconnect with familiar faces online at our General Meeting on 15 October.

Our next WESPA meeting will take place on the 4th November, and we are keen to welcome new members to our team of trustees. As several of our current trustees have sons in the Sixth Form, we are looking for new trustees to help us continue supporting the school and its wonderful community.

Please read the information below to find out more, and don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions or would like to know more about getting involved. You can reach us at williamellispa@gmail.com.

We wish you all a wonderful and relaxing half-term break!

The WESPA Trustees

WESPA General Meeting and  Annual General Meeting (AGM)* - IN PERSON
Wednesday 4th November in the WES Library at 6pm

Come along to hear about the events and activities we organise, how we raise funds, and how these funds are used to support different departments and initiatives across the school. Ultimately, our fundraising helps enrich our boys’ learning and experiences, supporting both their academic and extracurricular activities and providing opportunities that benefit the whole school community.

Everyone is welcome — whether you would simply like to find out more, meet other parents and carers, or get involved in whatever way you can.

* We require minimal attendees of at least 20 parents/carers to elect our new trustee members. Please save the date in your diaries and come along.

WESPA Needs You! – Trustee Recruitment

WESPA has built a strong and stable foundation over the years, thanks to a dedicated group of trustees and volunteers who have worked together to support the school and enrich opportunities for all our boys.

However, many of our current trustees have been in their roles for several years, and several will be stepping down as their sons move on from WES to sixth form or college. At our upcoming AGM, we therefore need new parents and carers to step forward and join the WESPA trustee team.

Trustee positions currently available:

  • Chair or Co-Chair
  • Secretary

We are particularly keen to hear from parents and carers across all year groups, with new representation from Years 7 and 8 especially important. Ideally, we would have trustees representing Years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11, ensuring that WESPA reflects the whole school community.

What does being a trustee involve?

WESPA trustees work together as a team to make decisions, organise and support activities, and ensure that the association continues to run effectively. Although trustees have individual roles and responsibilities, no one is expected to do everything alone. We share the workload, support one another and involve the wider WESPA community.

Our current trustees will be there to provide guidance, share their experience and ensure a smooth handover. You do not need previous trustee experience — just enthusiasm, commitment and a willingness to get involved.

Why WESPA matters

WESPA is a registered charity and an integral part of the WES community. Through fundraising, events and other initiatives, we help provide additional opportunities and support across the school.

Our activities include Open Events, Meet the Parent sessions, Quiz Nights, WES Fest, International Evening, the 5K Fun Run, uniform exchange and much more. The funds we raise support school departments for equipment, extracurricular activities, educational opportunities and initiatives that benefit all our boys.

Could you get involved?

If you are interested in becoming a trustee, or simply want to find out more about what is involved, please get in touch — there is no obligation to commit at this stage.

📧 williamellispa@gmail.com
Or speak to us through the WESPA Team WhatsApp group.

And remember, you don't have to be a trustee to be part of WESPA!

We are incredibly grateful to the many parents and carers who already give their time to help with events and activities. Whether you can help regularly or just occasionally, every contribution makes a difference. Getting involved is also a great way to meet other parents, build connections and strengthen our relationship with the school community.

Come and be part of WESPA — we'd love to hear from you!
