Autumn Term - 5th September 2025

Welcome to our latest news update, and to the new academic year. We hope that you and all our students had a smooth, relaxing and fun summer break. This newsletter has some important information about the start of the year, and as always some highlights of life for students at William Ellis.

This week we have shared with students in assembly the brilliant news about the results of our GCSE and sixth form students in 2025 - individual success stories and the high standards of attainment at William Ellis compared to boys across the country.

Key Stage 5 students celebrating their results in August

Our language subjects did especially well this year. You can read about this in the Ham & High newspaper. You can also see all our exam results on our school website.

These great results show what we can do when students, families and teachers all work together.

How We Talk to Each Other

It is important that home and school work well together. Please look at our Home-School Communication Guide. This tells you the best ways to contact us and who to speak to.

Please remember that our teachers and staff work with children all day. This means:

  • They cannot see you if you come to school without an appointment
  • They cannot answer emails or phone calls during the day when they are teaching

Please call the school office to make an appointment or use our normal ways to contact us. This way we can give you the help you need and to work successfully in partnership with you to support your child.

The Home-School Communication Guide outlines the ways that we expect everyone, students and adults, to speak to each other face to face and in written communication. These expectations apply across our whole community, including when families are speaking to each other.

Coming to School Every Day is Very Important

Every school day matters. When students come to school every day and on time, they do much better in their learning. We can see clearly in the results of our Year 11s that students make significantly more progress - several grades in each subject - if they attend school on time every day.

As we wrote in our note to you on Wednesday, now is a good time to get back into healthy habits:

  • Regular bedtimes
  • Good meals
  • Getting to school on time each day

These things will really help your child do well this year. A full guide to our attendance processes at William Ellis can be found here.

Welcome to our new Year 7

It has been great to see our new Year 7 in their WES uniform for the first time this week and beginning to put into practice all that they have learnt at Induction day and Summer School as they navigate the school site and get to grips with a secondary school timetable. We are very proud of what these boys have already achieved in this time of great change for them.

A reminder to Year 7 families that there will be an Information Evening on Wednesday 10th September, where you will have a chance to meet Mr Dennis, Head of Year 7 and Ms Saponia, Assistant Head of Year 7, along with your son's Form Tutor. You will be able to find out more about the Year 7 Outdoor Education programme which will begin with an activity day on 18th September and progress towards the camping trip at the Mill next Summer, and can raise any questions or worries arising from the first week of secondary school.

This event will begin at 5pm on Wednesday.

'My Child At School' Portal and Timetables

We hope that many parents and carers are familiar with My Child At School (MCAS) as a resource for engaging with your child's attendance, behaviour and assessment information. MCAS is also used for booking timeslots at Parents Evenings later in the school year.

Student timetables can be viewed from your child's MCAS profile and copies for referring to at home can be printed (from the desktop version you will need to right-click on the timetable and select 'print').

Year 7 families and other families with a child new to the school will be receiving MCAS login details today, or on Monday.

If you haven't previously used MCAS, please take some time over the weekend to log in and explore the information available to you from this portal: MyChildAtSchool - Login

Cashless payments at William Ellis

As many of you know, all payments at William Ellis are handled through our cashless payments system, ParentPay. This is also the system we use to support students who are eligible for free school meals. It is important that all parents are able to access the system and see their son's balance, and top up when they need to. If you need support with this, please go to https://www.williamellis.camden.sch.uk/student-and-family-information/cashless-payments

School Photos for Years 7 and 10, Tuesday 9th September

Next week students in Years 7 and 10 will have school photographs taken. Year 7 will have both individual 'profile' shots taken and a photograph of their form group together. These pictures can make a lovely keepsake for the future and will be available for families to purchase later in the term – families of these year groups will be sent a sample image and further details of how to place an order with the school photographer, Tempest, in due course.

Students who have joined us since last September will also have their 'profile' photo taken on Tuesday. It is important that we have a photograph on record of every student for safeguarding reasons - these individual photos will not be shared beyond the school.

Please ensure that students are in full uniform, with smiles at the ready, on that day!

Extra Curricular PE Activities

The PE department will be starting their programme of extracurricular clubs and activities before and after school and at lunchtimes from next week. The timetable can be viewed here.

Other departments will be launching extracurricular clubs and activities over the next couple of weeks. When a full timetable is finalised, this will be published on the school website.

Moving on to secondary school – our open events

If you, or anyone you know, has a son currently in Year 6 or Year 5, we hope you and/or they will join us for one of our open events over the coming half term. Details can be found on our website.

Camden’s new admissions guide is available on the Council’s website.

Parents and carers need to apply for a Year 7 place for September 2026 by 31st October 2025, even if they have a child already attending school in Camden. Details of how to do so will be provided by the Local Authority.

Keeshan's FC!

Congratulations to a team of former students who have recently won the Summer League Cup!

The team took the name 'Keeshan's FC' in tribute to our longstanding PE teacher Mick Keeshan, who retired last year after over 35 years teaching at WES.

The team wear our school colours of blue and gold and their emblem incorporates the the Gospel Oak tree from the school logo and uniform.
