Our Mission

William Ellis founded our school in 1862 because he believed that education should develop young people's powers of thinking, not only their memory, and that care for human wellbeing matters above all else. The motto he chose, "rather of use than fame" (better to be useful than famous), still shapes everything we do. It gives us our purpose: to nurture successful students and enable good citizens through strong relationships. This forms the basis of our School Development Plan each year.

We are one of a few all-boys, comprehensive, non-religious schools in London, and we are a boys' school by active, positive choice. Our community is guided by five values, the Five Rs: Respect, Resilience, Resourcefulness, Responsibility and Reflection.

Successful Students

We are dedicated to academic success for every boy, whatever his background or starting point. Our ambitious, carefully sequenced curriculum is designed specifically for William Ellis students. It builds lasting knowledge and makes demanding academic subjects, including modern and community languages, accessible to all. Literacy and oracy run through everything we teach, so that our boys grow into the thinking young men William Ellis envisaged. Through the LaSWAP sixth form, we accompany each student on a seven-year journey from 11 to 18.

Good Citizens

We develop young men who contribute positively to society. We believe there are many ways to be a boy. We promote a tender, considered masculinity, free from stereotypes, in which boys explore all their interests, take academic risks and are themselves. Clear expectations about doing what is right and respecting all others build character. Student leadership, outdoor education at The Mill and on Hampstead Heath, and a rich enrichment programme help each boy grow in confidence and concern for others.

Strong Relationships

As Camden's smallest school, we are a connected community in which every boy is known and valued. We understand the intensity and complexity of boyhood. We create an environment where students can express their emotions openly and develop both resilience and empathy. We work in genuine partnership with families, especially those facing disadvantage or whose sons have additional needs. Our dedicated staff model the warm, respectful relationships we hope our students will carry into adult life.
